Greensboro, N.C. - In the third and fourth games of a six game three-day stretch for the Lady Lions, Piedmont split a doubleheader with Greensboro College on the road. The Lady Lion softball team rallied to a close call in game one but the Pride won on a walk-off 5-4 before Piedmont put on an offensive showcase in game two taking it 9-1.
Four Lady Lions went 2-for-3 in the final game as
ABBY SMITH,
BECKA ROSS,
WHITNEY WOLFE and
BRITTANY FUTRAL all had multiple hit games. In each contest the Lady Lions produced a single hit more than their run total with 15 hits on the day and a combined 13 runs.
Game 1: Greensboro 5, Piedmont 4A late seventh inning rally by the Lady Lions kept the game going, but the Pride scored in the bottom of the frame for the walk-off victory 5-4. After Piedmont scored two in the seventh to extend the game tied at four, Greensboro recorded two hits and had a runner reach on both a fielder's choice and a walk.
The game started with momentum in the favor of the Pride who scored two runs in each the second and the third inning to take a 4-0 lead through three innings. In the top of the fourth, however, the Lady Lions bats finally came alive as they were able to score two of their own to cut it to a 4-2 deficit.
Gentry singled to start the inning and then
ALLISON VAUGHN sent one over the right field wall for her two RBI in the game. Piedmont would not score again until the game was on the line in the top of the seventh.
ABBY ATKINSON reached on a throwing error to begin the inning and moved to second on the play. The second error of the inning came one batter later as
LAURA CARTER too reached on an error and moved to second putting two runners in scoring position.
ABBY SMITH doubled to right field scoring Atkinson and on a Gentry groundout Carter scored to tie the game at four all. The Pride answered the Lady Lion rally however taking the game.
ALLISON VAUGHN had the best day at the plate for the ladies in Green and Gold as no one had more than one hit but she was 1-for-2 with two walks and a pair of RBI. Piedmont had a total of five hits scattered among five players with
ABBY SMITH and
ALLYSON GENTRY recording an RBI a piece.
Game 2: Piedmont 9, Greensboro 1The Lady Lions' bats were explosive in game two with 10 hits and nine runs while
AVERY MIGUES held the Pride to a single run in a 9-1 win. Migues earned her second win of the season, those coming on back-to-back days, as she went five innings giving up just three hits and a single run.
Piedmont left no doubt in the game scoring six runs in the top of the first, sending ten batters to the plate in the inning. There were a total of four walks in the inning along with three hits leading to the Pride's starting pitcher only lasting one inning.
Migues held the Pride to three straight groundouts in the bottom half of the frame leaving the Lady Lions' bats no time to cool off. Piedmont would score another pair of runs in the top of the second moving it to an 8-0 lead on two hits and an error.
LAURA CARTER reached on an error and stole second then reached third on an
ABBY SMITH single as she would reach second on the play.
ALLYSON GENTRY plated the first run of the inning on a groundout as Carter scored then a
BECKA ROSS single scored Smith.
In the third, PC would score again as Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score
WHITNEY WOLFE making it 9-0, but in the bottom of the frame, the Pride would score their lone run of the game. Greensboro scored a run on two hits but would manage no more.
BRITTANY FUTRAL had a team-high two RBI in the game while going 2-for-3 in the contest.
BECKA ROSS also went 2-for-3 with one of her hits being a triple.
Piedmont will be back on the field tomorrow taking on Averett University in Danville, Virginia. Game one is scheduled to begin at noon with the second game to follow.
