Need to KnowScore: Piedmont 80, North Carolina Wesleyan 64Records: Lady Lions 4-3 (2-0 USA South), Battling Bishops 3-5 (1-1 USA South)Location: Demorest, GA - Cave ArenaDemorest, GAÂ - After spending the first six games and nearly a month of the season on the road, the Piedmont College women's basketball team looked right at home in their first contest in the friendly confines of Cave Arena knocking off NC Wesleyan College by 16, 80-64, on Tuesday evening.
Piedmont raced out to an 8-0 lead over the opening two minutes of the game feeding off the Cave Crazies for the first time this season, but the Battling Bishops settled in to close out the quarter only trailing by one. Â The two teams went back and forth in the 2nd quarter with four lead changes until Piedmont closed out the period on a 14-1 run not allowing a bucket from the field to the visitors over the final four minutes of the 2nd.
With Piedmont up six at the intermission, NC Wesleyan came out firing in the 3rd as Kenyata Harris warmed up scoring back-to-back field goals for five of her game-high 22 points as part of a 7-0 run to begin the 2nd half helping the Bishops to a one-point lead, 38-37.
However, it was all Green and Gold from there as Piedmont picked up buckets from four different players including a crowd-thrilling three-pointer from
JATASIA BAILEY that put the Lady Lions back up 10 as part of a quarter-closing 23-6 run from the home team.
The Lady Lions went on to cruise to their third straight win taking the 16-point victory over the Bishops marking the second straight season that Piedmont has opened the home portion of its schedule with a win as PC knocked off Mary Baldwin by 47 last season to start the home slate.
Turning Point--After NC Wesleyan erased a six-point halftime deficit in less than two minutes of the 3rd, Piedmont took over outscoring the Battling Bishops an incredible 23-6 over the remaining 8:20 of the period putting the game out of reach with a 16-point lead headed into the 4th.Â
Standout Performances--
DAKOTA SULLENS came up just one rebound shy of her 4th double-double in her last five games as she took down nine rebounds and poured in 15 points to lead the Lady Lions in scoring for the third time this season.
--NC Wesleyan's Kenyata Harris turned in a season-high 22 points on 9-of-20 shooting including 50% from three-point land.
Inside the Box Score--Piedmont picked up 36 points off 29 NC Wesleyan turnovers forced with 16 of those coming in the second half alone when PC picked up its defensive pressure starting with a dominant third quarter.
--Sullens did most of her damage at the line as she connected on 7-of-10 free throws and shot 4-of-8 from the field.
News & Notes--DAKOTA SULLENS' three double-doubles in the first seven games is the most by a Lady Lion through seven games since Sada Wheeler opened the 2011-12 season with six such performances.--Wheeler went on to be named the GSAC Player of the Year later that season.Â
Up NextPiedmont will be in Florida for its next two games playing in the "Cruizin Classic" hosted by Trip Sports with the first of the two contests coming on Friday, December 18 against Johnson & Wales before playing Webster University the following day.
