Dynamic Duo Does It Again as Women's Soccer Knocks Off Maryville 2-0 to Advance to Finals

Need to Know
Score:  Piedmont 2 - Maryville 0
Records:  Lady Lions 19-1-1 (10-1-1 USA South), Scots 13-4-2 (9-1-2 USA South)
Location: Raleigh, North Carolina - Meredith Athletic Field

Raleigh, NC - In the second semifinal of the USA South Championship Tournament, the Piedmont College women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to overtake Maryville College and earn a spot in the championship game set for Saturday, November 7.

Coming into the tourney as the #2 seed, Piedmont earned a postseason win over the 3rd seeded Scots for the first time since the two met in the Great South Athletic Conference Championship Game in 2001 when PC claimed its first GSAC title.  The two had yet to meet in the postseason since both left the GSAC for the USA South in 2012.

The first 45 minutes saw no goals for either side, but it only took about four minutes for Piedmont's MEGAN HATFIELD to break the deadlock when she took a brilliant feed from SARAH WEBER and smashed away Piedmont's first goal of the day in the 49th minute.

With a 1-0 lead intact, the Lady Lions doubled the margin when CASSIDY REICH put away a Hatfield service in the 63rd minute to make it 2-0 Piedmont.  With the Lady Lion defense holding strong for another clean sheet, Piedmont would go on to lay claim to the 2-0 win heading to the USA South Championship Game for the 2nd time in the last three seasons.

The win also continues a record-setting season for Piedmont who picked up its 19th win of the season with the victory.  That 19th win sets a new USA South record for wins in a season besting the 1990 and 1995 Methodist squads who each won 18 games on the year.

Turning Point
--MEGAN HATFIELD's goal just a few minutes after the halftime break put Maryville chasing the game and gave Piedmont more space to work with up top holding a lead.

Standout Performances
--MICHAELA GARDNER earned another shutout with the 2-0 win as she moves to 18-1-1 as a starter this season with her record setting 12th solo shutout as she passes Marjorie Hammond who had 11 solo shutouts in 2011.
--MEGAN HATFIELD tallied her second postseason goal with a game-winning goal to her name again after she scored the deciding goal in Piedmont's quarterfinal win over NC Wesleyan as well.

Inside the Box Score
--Both teams had seven shots on goal in the game though Piedmont was outshot overall 17-11 by the Scots.
--With Hatfield scoring her 10th goal of the season, the veteran joins youngster CASSIDY REICH as Piedmont's first pair of double-digit scorers since Laura Goodwin and Dilyn MacLean each had 10 in the 2012 season.

News & Notes
--The victory today is Piedmont's first postseason win over Maryville since the 2001 GSAC Championship Game when the Lady Lions claimed their first conference title in the Great South.
--PC had matched up with Maryville in postseason play in both the 2009 and 2010 season most recently with the Scots rallying to win both matches and claim the league title.
--Piedmont is now 2-0-1 in its last three meetings with the Scots.

Up Next
With the win, Piedmont will now move on to the USA South Championship Game set for tomorrow at 2:00 pm.  It will be the second time that Piedmont has played in the USA South title game as PC won the 2013 tourney the last they made a championship appearance.  The Lady Lions will meet Methodist University in the final after the 4th seeded Monarchs upset the top seed and tourney host Meredith College earlier today in the first semifinal.
