Lady Lions Defeat Averett Cougars 78-56 In Strong USA South Showing at Home

Brianna Barrett came off the bench to give the Lions 13 points today, shooting 4-6 from the floor, 3-5 from outside the arc, and 2-2 at the foul line.
Box Score Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College Lady Lions defeated Averett University 78-56 at Cave arena to move to 6-2 in the USA South Athletic Conference. The Lady Lions led both halves by 10+ points to get the win at home.

The visiting Cougars held the Lady Lions scoreless for the first three minutes of regulation. Lauren Hamel finally broke the silence with a smart jumper. Nearing the ten minute mark, Piedmont was still trailing Averett, 18-10. Moments later, #Brianna Barrett notched two successive three's to start the ball rolling on a Piedmont comeback.

With 5:30 left on the clock, Erin Clifford hit her own pair of three's to bring the Lions within one of Averett, at 27-26. The lead finally came to the home team when Chandler Alverson hit another three-pointer. Despite a shaky start, the Lions found their momentum in the last third of the half, pulling ahead and grabbing a 43-31 lead by halftime.

The Lady Lions took to the floor quickly in the second half, matching buckets with Averett several times. Symone Ball came from nowhere to earn the first of two blocks in the today's match; also earning a rebound on the play. With ten minutes left to play Ball notched her second block to maintain a 14-point lead over the Cougars, 54-40.

Hamel earned two of her twelve points on the day with one of her signature layups on a fast break with seven minutes left to play. The Lions continued to match points with the Cougars throughout the rest of the half and add a few extra in, earning a 20+ point lead before the final buzzer rang with the scoreboard showing 78-56.

Three Lady Lions led the way in the points column today with Barrett gathering 13, including a trio of three's, Alverson scoring 12, and Hamel going 6-16 from the floor. Carly Sales led the way on defense with nine rebounds for the Lions.

With the victory, the Lady Lions are now 6-2 in the USA South and 12-5 overall. Piedmont's next action is an away trip to Lookout Mountain, GA to face conference opponent, Covenant College.
