Box Score DEMOREST, Georgia -- The Lady Lions lost a nailbiter Sunday afternoon at Cave Arena to USA South Conference opponent Christopher Newport by the score of 57-52. The Lions were down by 14 with under two minutes left to play, but made a late second half run to pull within five points of the Captains before the final buzzer.
In a game that featured just three lead changes and one tie it was Christopher Newport that used a 13-3 run punctuated by a Tia Perry jump shot that paced the Captains to a six-point lead (17-11) midway through the first half. Piedmont made a late push in the closing minutes of the first frame highlighted by a Kiki Thompson steal and layup that pulled the Lady Lions within two going into intermission (24-22).
Both teams managed to put together successful offensive runs in the second half, but it was Christopher Newport that would manage to outscore Piedmont 33-30 in the final frame. The Captains second half was highlighted by a 7-0 run that put the Lions down by ten with just under seven minutes left to play. The Captains would eventually stretch their lead to 14 but the Lady Lions answered with a 9-0 run to come within five of the Captains with 31 seconds left in regulation.
Second chance points as well as points off the bench would be the difference in the game as Christopher Newport was able to bring down 14 offensive rebounds to Piedmont's five while the visitors bench held the edge in scoring 19-7.
Piedmont placed two players in double-figures, led by senior
LAUREN ANDERSON's game-high 16 points.
TAYLOR SWOSZOWSKI added 12 points including a pair of three-pointers, while
LAUREN HAMEL chipped in with nine.
Christopher Newport was led by Camry Green who put up 14 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Tia Perry also contributed to the Captains scoring attack with 13 points.
The Lady Lions (9-10, 5-8 USA South) will end the regular season with five games on the road against USA South Conference competition. Piedmont will travel this Wednesday to take on the Lagrange College Lady Panthers with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 PM.
