Box Score DEMOREST, Georgia -- The Piedmont College women's basketball team gave undefeated Ferrum College all they could handle Saturday in USA South Athletic Conference action at PC's Cave Arena falling 86-78. After trailing by as many as 19 the Lady Lions were able to fight back to trail by one but would run out of steam in attempting to hand the Lady Panthers their first loss of the season.
Ferrum (10-0, 4-0 USA South) controlled most of the first half and led 44-31 at intermission despite Piedmont finishing the period on a 10-2 run. FC connected on 59% (19-32) of their first half shots compared to a dismal 31% (12-38) for Piedmont.
Piedmont would slowly chip away in the second half and eventually cut the lead to a single point (61-60) on a three-point basket by
SYMONE BALL with 11:21 remaining. Ferrum would 17 of the game's next 28 points over the next seven plus minutes to lead 78-69 with less than four mintues remaining.
FC's Katy Kipps led five Lady Panthers in double-figures with a game-high 24 points and completed the double-double with 11 rebounds. Jacole Hairston added 16 points and seven rebounds.
For Piedmont (4-6, 0-4 USA South)
LAUREN ANDERSON and
SYMONE BALL each scored 18 points. Anderson added a team-best eight rebounds while Ball did her damage on an efficient 7-12 from the field.
ALYSSA JONES added 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals from the point guard position. Jones' impressive line was highlighted by a season-best 5-7 from behind the three-point line.
Ferrum outrebounded the Lady Lions 41-32 but Piedmont was able to pressure the Lady Panthers into 23 turnovers.
The game was the second of a seven-game USA South homestand with the Lady Lions returning to action Friday, January 11 with a 7:00 league game against the visiting Angels of Meredith College.
