Lady Lions Fall Behind Early, Can't Catch Up To Maryville

Contact: Brian Carter, Interim Sports Information Director

Sada Wheeler was dominate in the Lady Lions' loss at Maryville, nearly collecting a triple-double. The senior had 26 points, 19 rebounds and seven blocks in Piedmont's fourth loss of the season.
Box Score

Maryville, TN - Piedmont led for just 25 seconds before Maryville hit a three and never looked back en route to a 59-56 win.  The Lady Lions lost their second game of the season to the arch-rivals, and just fourth overall.  The women were led by senior Sada Wheeler's near triple-double, but found themselves chasing the Lady Scots all game long.

Maryville hit a few treys early on to take off, but Wheeler scored five of the first eight Piedmont points to keep the women close.  However, the Lady Scots again pushed their lead to 13 with 7:26 left in the opening half, and it appeared as though PC was losing its grip.  A 10-2 run to close out the half for the Lady Lions got them within five of the lead, with eight of those points coming from Wheeler.

A layup by Wheeler coming out of the break bridged the gap to just three, and tied the game at 33 on junior Keiondria Thompson's fastbreak layup five minutes into the half.  Thompson then hit a free throw moments later to give Piedmont another one-point lead, but it wouldn't hold up long.  Maryville ripped off eight straight points before the Lady Lions could respond with six of their own.  The home team then dropped in another eight unanswered points to go up 10.

Piedmont rallied for a final time, going on a 9-1 run which started on a 3-pointer by senior Amber Satterfield, followed by a layup from junior Alyssa Jones.  After a single shot by Maryville from the charity stripe, Wheeler went back to work with a pair of baskets, making the game 50-48 with 2:15 to go.  A downtown tri-fecta by the Lady Scots moments after taking a timeout looked to put the finishing touches on the game with 1:21 on the clock.  Thompson responded with a triple with 56 seconds remaining, making it once again a two point game.  Piedmont then was forced to foul four times to send Maryville to the line, giving the home team a chance to ice the game from the charity stripe.

The Lady Scots hit both the first time to the line before Wheeler again came up huge for the Lady Lions, as Piedmont trailed by two with 25 ticks on the clock.  Unfortunately for PC, Maryville was automatic from the line the rest of the way, making all four of the next attempts, taking a five-point cushion before Thompson hit a buzzer-beating jumper to finish the game down three, 59-56.

Wheeler's near triple-double consisted of 26 points, 19 rebound and seven blocks, making 11 of 20 shots from the field.  Thompson also had 10 points while Jones finished with six points and seven boards.  The Lady Lions return to action Wednesday night, which will be senior night for SADA WHEELER, Satterfield and Shanice Wheeler.  Piedmont takes on Covenant College at 6:00 pm.
