Decatur, GA -- The Piedmont College women's basketball team took its second Great South Athletic Conference victory of the season earlier tonight winning 59-50 at league member Agnes Scott College. After letting the Scotties hang around in the first half of action, the Lady Lions put the clamps down defensively after the break to hold their opponent under 30% from the floor en route to the road win.
The two GSAC opponents battled early in tonight's contest as the pair traded the lead back and forth for the first 11 minutes of play. After a
Shanice Wheeler layup tied the score at 14 a piece, Agnes Scott would surge forward to take a 28-21 lead into halftime.
Down by seven at the break, Piedmont would begin to chip away at the home team lead until a pair of free throws from
Alyssa Jones cut the margin down to just a single point. A Jones three-pointer 40 seconds later would give the visitors their first lead since the 12:13 mark in the first half and gave Piedmont a lead it would not relinquish down the stretch for a 59-50 victory on the road.
Sophomore
Alyssa Jones and senior
Laura Simmons both led the way for the Lady Lions in the scoring department tabbing 14 points each while combining to collect 11 total rebounds. Jones added five assists to just a pair of turnovers on the night while Simmons was a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Veteran guard
Shanice Wheeler also had a good night posting a double-double performance, her second of 2010-11 after having accomplished the feat in a 23-point win over in-state rival Oglethorpe University. Wheeler pulled down 11 boards while also chipping in 10 points as one of three Lady Lions to score in double figures.
Post player
Sada Wheeler came close to her own double-double snagging ten rebounds while amassing eight total points. Despite continuing to be an offensive threat, defense has been the story of the forward's 2010-11 season as her presence down low and 3.1 blocks per game (15th-NCAA) has been key to Piedmont's nationally ranked field goal percentage defense.
The win moves PC to 6-4 overall and a perfect 2-0 in GSAC play. The squad will put their undefeated league record on the line when they host conference member Spelman College on Saturday, January 8 for a 2:00 afternoon contest in the Cave.
