Demorest, GA -- The Piedmont College women's basketball team extended its season-best winning streak to four games this evening at Cave Arena fending off visiting Great South Athletic Conference member Agnes Scott College by the score of 53-45. The victory improves the Lady Lions to 9-11 overall and 7-2 in conference play.
With the score knotted 6-6 at the 15-minute mark the Lady Lions exploded with 32 of the next 45 points to hold a game-high 19 point lead just minutes before the half.
Sada Wheeler led with 14 points, 12 coming in the paint, to give the Lady Lions a comfortable 38-22 advantage at intermission.
In the second period the home team extended the margin to 21 but saw the Scotties chip away with a 17-5 run over the next 10 minutes to cut the margin to nine. During the run the Lady Lions were held scoreless for six minutes and committed four turnovers that led to seven points.
PC clung to a 50-39 lead but saw the Scotties hit four consecutive points before
Alyssa Jones sealed the victory with a three-pointer. When the final buzzer sounded the Lady Lions escaped with the eight-point win.
In the second half the Lady Lions shot only 6-24 (25%) from the floor but played air tight defense allowing only 8-27 (30%) from Agnes Scott. The game featured only 15 free throws off 19 fouls.
Wheeler led all scorers with 19 points while
Lisa Jennings added 11 points including a game-high three tri-fectas.
Piedmont will hit the road for the next Great South Athletic Conference game at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL with tip off slated for 3:00.
