Atlanta, GA -- The Piedmont College women's basketball team collected its first win of the 2010-11 season earlier this afternoon defeating Sewanee-University of the South 89-67 in the Emory University Tip-Off Classic. The Lady Lions used their fast paced attack to overwhelm the Tigers as Piedmont scored 37 fast break points compared to just two for Sewanee.
PC started out hot with a 12-4 run to open play and kept the pressure on their opponent from Tennessee maintaining a double-digit lead throughout much of the first half. Sophomore
Alyssa Jones gave the Lady Lions their largest lead of the opening half at 20 points on a jumper in the paint with 5:39 remaining to push the score to 42-22.
After carrying a 15 point lead into halftime, Piedmont continued to pour it on in the second period opening with a 9-0 run including a three-pointer from
Amber Satterfield that pushed PC's lead to 24. Coach
Jamie Purdy's squad continued to leave little doubt as to the outcome of the match-up as their lead dipped below 20 points for only 23 seconds in the second half.
Helping Piedmont to the 89-67 victory was the sophomore point guard Jones who scored in double figures for the first time this season posting ten points while also grabbing eight total rebounds. Junior
Sada Wheeler worked the glass for 11 rebounds in a double-double effort that included 12 points tying her for the team high.
Also making a statement once again in her debut season was freshman
Lauren Hamel who led the team in scoring for the second night in a row. Satterfield represented the fourth Lady Lion to score in double figures on the evening tallying 11 points while shooting 33% from the field.
The win improves the Lady Lions to 1-1 overall after finishing play in the Emory University Tip-Off Classic. Piedmont will now return home to host Oglethorpe University on Tuesday, November 23 for a 5:00 game in their first home action of 2010-11.
