The Piedmont College softball team opened action at the Maryville College Tournament this afternoon in Maryville, TN by splitting a pair of games. The Lady Lions fell to DePauw University in the first game 8-0 but rebounded to defeat Centre College 6-5 in the finale.
Depauw, currently ranked sixth in the latest NFCA NCAA Division-III national poll, posted a single run in first, and seven in the final three innings to take the shutout victory. The Lady Lions could only muster four hits, while the Tigers notched eight.
In the second contest PC jumped out with two runs in the top of the first stealing four bags and capitalizing on a pair of errors. The home team cut the advantage in half with one run in the second, which the Lady Lions matched in the top of the third.
In the fifth Piedmont extended the lead to 6-1 on three hits and a Centre error. The home team matched the three runs in the bottom of the inning, all unearned. The home team threatened in the seventh but fell one run dropping the 6-5 decision.
B.J. COFER picked up her first victory of the season going six innings allowing one earned run while striking out five.
LINDSAY DREVLOW notched her first save of the season with an inning of work.
LEAH DELLA TORRE and
MICHELLE CRANDALL posted a pair of hits and a double respectively to lead the Lady Lions offense.
PC, now 2-6 overall, will take on Centre College tomorrow, March 8th at 1:00 in the second day of the Maryville College Tournament.
