Trailing by five runs in the bottom of the eighth the Piedmont College baseball team rallied, but fell just short this afternoon to visiting Millsaps College at Loudermilk Field by the score of 6-5. The Majors played spoiler in the Lions' home opener and handed the home team its second one-run loss of the season.
Millsaps posted a single unearned run in the third inning to take the early advantage. Piedmont responded in the bottom of the fourth to tie the score as
JOHN DUKE drove in
ANDREW MIGETZ with a sacrifice fly. The Majors retook control of the game with three runs in the fifth and two in the seventh for a 6-1 lead.
In the eighth Piedmont posted three runs on four hits as the first four hitters reached base.
JUSTIN VORHERR drove in the first with a sharp single up the middle and advanced to second on a throwing error. The Lions then took advantage of a pair of balk calls getting within two runs.
After a scoreless ninth that featured a homerun saving web gem from rightfielder Vorherr, the stage was set for the dramatic finish. After a strikeout Migetz blasted a triple to rightcenter and scored on a Zack Kunz single up the middle, his first career hit as a Lion. The Lions would place runners at the corners but ended the game on a groundout and dropped the one-run decision.
Duke led the offense going 4-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Migetz added a pair of hits and runs respectively while
DUSTY BLACK threw two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief. Starter
MATT BURGESS took the tough luck loss going five innings allowing one earned run while scattering five hits.
The Lions outhit the Majors 12-7 but committed five errors that led to four unearned runs. PC stranded 11 runners on base while Millsaps left 10.
The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow, February 10th at Loudermilk Field with first pitch slated for 3:00.
