The Piedmont College baseball team opened the 2009 season with a heartbreaking loss at Guilford College this afternoon in Greensboro, NC by the score of 19-18. The Lions gave up a two-run homerun in the bottom of the ninth marking the fourth walkoff decision in the last five meetings with the Quakers.
After the Lions plated a single run in the first the Quakers retook the lead with four in the home half. Piedmont rallied with three runs in the top of the third as the middle of the order notched three consecutive doubles. After the Quakers answered with a single run PC took control with eight runs over the next three innings.
Guilford would not be denied as the home team plated six runs in the sixth inning to tie the score 12-12. The Lions answered with a single run in the seventh and five in the eighth to take an 18-12 lead. The Quakers posted four in the eighth and retired PC in order in ninth setting up the dramatic finish.
GC went single, double putting runners on first and second. After a sacrifice fly Drew Gurkin connected on the game winning homer to leftfield, the third blast of the day for the Quakers.
COREY LINDSEY paced the Lions offense going 3-4 with a pair of homeruns and four runs scored.
BRADLEY ROLAND also went deep and collected four RBI's while
JARED MOON notched four hits and three runs.
Piedmont's defense committed five errors that led to 10 unearned runs. Of the Lions' 18 runs, 15 were earned as the offense produced 10 extra base hits. These two teams will finisht the series tomorrow, February 8th at 2:00.
