In the fourth and final game of the Rawlings Southern Classic the Piedmont College baseball team fell to visiting York College 3-1 at Loudermilk Field this afternoon. The Spartans held the home team at bay allowing a single run, the lowest offensive output of the season for the Lions.
The loss drops PC to an even 5-5 overall. The Lions will hit the road on Saturday, February 28th where they will face Marietta College at the North Carolina Wesleyan College Tournament of Champions in Rocky Mount, NC with game time slated for 10:00.
The Spartans posted a single run in the top of the first inning on two hits. The visitors would tack on the eventual game winning run in the fourth inning after a Lion error. Piedmont would score its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth with three hits.
York added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with three hits and retired the Lions in order to seal the victory.
Start ALEX BEEBE took the loss going six innings allowing one earned run while striking out eight. CALEB COCHRAN added a pair of shutout relief innings striking out three. JARED VERMILYA led the offense going 2-3 with a run scored and a walk.
JUSTIN VORHERR, BRANDON HITCH and COREY LINDSEY also chipped in with a pair of hits each. The Lions outhit the Spartans 11-7 but stranded 10 runners, five of which were in scoring position.
