The Piedmont College women's basketball team fell to visiting Great South Athletic Conference member Maryville College this afternoon at Cave Arena by the score of 77-63. After leading by a mere two points at the half the Scots exploded for 47 points in the second frame en route to the win.
The Lady Lions fall to 9-15 overall and 7-5 in the Great South. The women will enter the upcoming GSAC Tournament as the fourth seed and will play host to fifth-seeded LaGrange College in the first round on Tuesday, February 24th beginning at 7:00.
In the first half the Scots led for the duration and found themselves up 23-14 with eight minutes remaining, the largest advatange of the frame. Piedmont chipped away down the stretch and LISA JENNINGS hit a pair of free throws with less than a second remaining to cut the lead to 30-28 at the break.
In the second frame Maryville opened with a 7-0 run over the first two minutes to regain control of the action. The Lady Lions cut the lead to five with six minutes remaining but could get no closer as the visitors pulled away down the stretch with an 11-2 run to seal the 14-point victory.
BETH ADCOCK and LAURA SIMMONS notched 15 points apiece while SHANICE WHEELER posted a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. LISA JENNINGS narrowly missed a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Lions shot 33% from the floor while the visitors posted 54%. Both teams committed 18 turnovers, but Maryville held the edge 17-9 in points off those turnovers.
