The Piedmont College baseball team picked up an 8-3 victory this afternoon at Loudermilk Field over visiting USA-South member Ferrum College. The Lions jumped out with six runs in the first three innings which proved to be enough as senior
MATT BURGESS picked up his second win of the season.
In the top of the first PC posted three runs with
JOHN DUKE and
JUSTIN VORHERR coming thru with two-out RBI hits. The Lions added a pair in the second as Zack Kunz doubled home a run and scored on a
JARED VERMILYA single.
The Lions added single run in the third, fifth and eight to increase the lead to 8-1. In the home half on the ninth the Panthers posted a pair of runs on a two out bases loaded single but could get no closer and dropped the five-run decision.
Burgess went seven and two-thirds innings allowing only one earned run and scattering eight hits while striking out six. Kunz led the offense going 2-5 with a pair of runs scored while Vorherr went 2-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
PC posted 10 hits, the seventh time this season the offense has reached double figures. In addition the Lions swiped six bags and produced five runs with two outs.
The Lions move to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Rawlings Southern Classic. The men will wrap up the tournament tomorrow, February 22nd as they host York (PA) College at Loudermilk Field beginning at 11:00.
