The Piedmont College women's basketball team went on the road this afternoon and defeated Great South Athletic Conference host LaGrange College in LaGrange, GA by the score of 91-90 in overtime. The Lady Lions trailed with 30 seconds remaining in regulation and overtime but came through to notch their sixth conference win.
LC jumped out with the first six points of the game and led by five points with 13 minutes remaining. Piedmont responded with a 7-2 run to tie the score 19-19 halfway through the frame. Down the stretch there were four lead changes and three ties as the Panthers carried a slim two-point advantage into intermission.
With the score 47-45 with 14 minutes to go the home team went on an 11-0 run to take command of the action. PC chipped away at the lead forcing a 74-74 tie with just over a minute remaining. The Panthers converted a layup and foul shot for a three-point lead before
LISA JENNINGS stepped up and tied the score with 30 seconds to go with a tri-fecta sending the game into overtime.
In the extra frame Piedmont never trailed but saw its three-point lead evaporate when the Panthers drained a three-pointer with a minute remaining. After the teams traded baskets LC took its final lead of the game with 30 seconds to go at 90-88.
With the game on the line
KAYLA DUNCAN then hit a jumper and was fouled with 17 seconds left. The senior calmly knocked down the free-throw and after a missed LaGrange basket the one-point victory was sealed.
LAURA SIMMONS led four Lady Lions in double figures with a game high 25 points and 10 rebounds while
BETH ADCOCK followed with 21 points. Duncan posted 19 points while
COURTNEY ODUM recorded 11.
The victory moves the women to 8-14 overall and 6-4 in the GSAC. Piedmont will return to action again on Wednesday, February 18th as they host conference member Wesleyan College at Cave Arena beginning at 6:00.
