Six-Run Fifth Leads Baseball Past Sewanee

Spencer Shelton went seven strong innings for his first victory of the season in the Lions' 9-2 win over Sewanee.
The Piedmont College baseball team picked up its second victory of the season this afternoon over visiting Sewanee-University of the South at Loudermilk Field by the score of 9-2. With the score tied 1-1 in the fifth the Lions exploded for six runs on four hits including a pair of homeruns.

The Tigers got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first. PC was held scoreless for the next three innings but knotted the score on a JARED VERMILYA two-out single plating Zack Kunz from second in the fourth.

In the home half of the next inning JUSTIN VORHERR led off with a walk and score two hitters later on a ZAC STEIN RBI-triple. After the second out of the inning COREY LINDSEY hammered his third homerun of the season to increase the lead to three. Two more Lions reached base before Vermilya struck again with a three-run blast, his second of the year.

Piedmont added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh as JOHN DUKE notched a two-out single that plated a pair. The Tigers tallied a single run in the ninth but could get no closer and dropped their first decision of the season.

SPENCER SHELTON went seven strong innings allowing one earned run while striking six. Vermilya led the offense going a perfect 2-2 reaching base four times and driving in as many runs.

The victory moves PC to 2-3 overall and 1-2 at home. The two teams will finish up the season series tomorrow, February 15th at Loudermilk Field beginning at 2:00.
