The Piedmont College men's basketball team improved to 6-2 at Cave Arena with its 87-70 victory this evening over non-conference foe Sewanee-University of the South. The Lions hit their stride in the second half hitting 67% of their shots from the floor and holding the visiting Tigers to a slim 29 points after intermission.
The teams played nearly even in the first half, featuring seven lead changes and five ties. With the score tied 29-29 with just over four minutes remaining the Lions went on an 8-2 run with six points coming from
J.C. HEREBIA. The Tigers answered to tie the score at 41 apiece before Sam Coppage drained a pair of free throws to send the home team into the locker room with the advantage.
It was all PC in the second half as the Lions opened the frame with a 12-3 run forcing five turnovers. Sewanee cut the lead to nine with five minutes to go but
JUSTIN RUSH stopped the surge with a steal and an acrobatic fast break layup, followed by a hit from the charity stripe for an old-fashioned three-point play. At the time of the final buzzer PC held its largest lead of the night at 17.
Herebia and Coppage led the way for Piedmont with 23 and 21 points respectively while
MICHAEL RUBIO added 15 points including a game high five steals.
JUSTIN RUSH added 12 points while
TRACEY GARDNER posted a team best five assists against no turnovers.
The win moves Piedmont to 8-11 overall. The Lions will return to Great South Athletic Conference action again on Saturday, January 31st as they travel to Maryville College in Maryville, TN with tip-off slated for 4:00.
