The Piedmont College men's basketball team downed Toccoa Falls College, its closest geographic opponent, this evening at Cave Arena by the score of 107-64. Tonight's Coaches vs. Cancer initiative raised over $500 which will be donated on behalf of the men's basketball team to the American Cancer Society.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaboration between the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the American Cancer Society in an effort to raise awareness and funds for the fight against cancer. The coaching staff, along with the event staff, wore formal dress accompanied by sneakers to represent the cause.
The Lions, who never trailed in the game, jumped out to an 18-10 advantage. With the score 22-15 PC posted an 11-3 run as
MICHAEL RUBIO connected on five points and a pair of steals. The Eagles rallied to get to 35-25 with five minutes remaining before the home team ended the first half on an 18-2 run to take control of the action.
Piedmont picked up right where it left off to open the second frame with 19-6 run as Rubio and forward
J.C. HEREBIA combined for 12 points. The Lions would lead by a game high 51 points with four minutes to go and coasted to the 107-64 victory.
The Lions shot a remarkable 44-67 (66%) from the floor and posted a season best 28 assisted baskets. The men forced 19 turnovers that led to 30 points including seven steals that led to fast break layups.
Rubio led four teammates in double figures with a game high 20 points. Herebia followed with 19 points while Sam Coppage and
MIKE CHATMAN added 12 points apiece. The Lions used points from 12 different players en route to the victory.
