With a pair of victories this afternoon the Piedmont College volleyball team was crowned champions for the second straight season of the Greensboro College Alumni Invitational. PC defeated Guilford College and Lynchburg College by the scores of 3-1 to complete the weekend undefeated and garner the tournament title.
For her efforts junior
NIKKI COLE was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. The outside hitter led the Lady Lions with a tournament average of 10.5 kills per match. Joining Cole on the All-Tournament Team was teammate
KALIN DEMARRAIS.
In the first match against Guilford the Quakers took the first game 25-21. Piedmont responded winning the next three 25-8, 25-18 and 25-19 marking the third consecutive time the Lady Lions rallied after dropping the first frame. Cole and teammate
MEGHANN CLARK recorded 10 kills apiece, aided by
TYLER BALDONADO's 43 assists.
JENNIFER GRANLUND led the team with 14 digs and four service aces while
KATIE TUCKER and
RACHEL POWELL controlled the net combining for seven blocks.
In the tournament's finale the Lady Lions took the first two sets from Lynchburg 25-18 and 25-17. The Hornets came alive to take the third set 25-22 but were put away in the fourth and final frame 25-20. DeMarrais and Cole led the offense with 13 and nine kills respectively while Granlund again paced the defense with 14 digs. Powell, Tucker and Cole posted five blocks each up front to seal the victory.
Piedmont, who now stands at 7-1 overall, will return to action again on Wednesday, September 10th as they take on Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA beginning at 7:00.
