Volleyball Team Opens 2008 Campaign With Three Wins At Lynx Invitational

Junior setter Tyler Baldonado helped lead the Lady Lions to a 3-1 season start at the Lynx Invitational with 99 assists and 13 kills.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Bill Shook the Piedmont College volleyball team won three of four matches at the Lynx Invitational hosted by Rhodes College this weekend in Memphis, TN. The Lady Lions swept a pair of games on Saturday over St. Catherine College and Randolph College 3-0 respectively. On Sunday the women dropped the first match against Texas Lutheran University in straight sets but rebounded to defeat SCAC foe Millsaps College 3-0.

The Lady Lions now stand at 3-1 overall and will return to action on Friday, September 5th as they travel to the Greensboro College Alumni Invitational in Greensboro, NC where they will take on Oglethorpe University and tournament host Greensboro College.

On Saturday the women breezed past St. Catherine 25-7, 25-17 and 25-13 to give Shook his first career victory at Piedmont. In the second match the Lady Lions continued their impressive play defeating Randolph 25-13, 25-12 and 25-15. Sophomore KALIN DEMARRAIS, the reigning Great South Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, notched seven kills against SCC while junior setter TYLER BALDONADO tallied 49 assists on the afternoon.

Texas Lutheran snapped the team's two-match winning streak in straight sets 25-21, 25-16 and 25-23. The Lady Lions rebounded overpowering Millsaps 25-15, 25-18 and 25-12. Junior NIKKI COLE paced the offense recording 15 kills on the day including a team high 10 against TLC.

Baldonado finished the weekend with 99 assists, while teammate Cole added 28 total kills. The Lady Lions had five players who averaged better than four kills per game while freshman RACHEL POWELL made her debut averaging 4.25 kills per game.
