After hitting the road for the first nine matches of 2008 campaign the Piedmont College volleyball team won a pair in straight sets this afternoon in the home opener at Cave Arena. In the first contest the Lady Lions defeated Great South Athletic Conference member LaGrange College 25-7, 25-14 and 26-24 and completed the afternoon sweep with a 25-7, 25-14 and 25-12 win against Sewanee-University of the South.
NIKKI COLE led the offensive surge against LC with eight kills while MEGHANN CLARK chipped in with six. On the defensive side KATIE TUCKER made her prescence felt at the net leading the team with six total blocks. Libero JENNIFER GRANLUND led the Lady Lions with 13 digs, the ninth time this season she has posted double figures, while Cole added 12 digs respectively.
PC never looked back in the afternoon finale, holding their opponents to a mere 33 points in the three-set affair. In the first set the Lady Lions rattled off 12 consecutive points during Cole's service and followed that with another 12-point run in the second set during ASHLEY CHIMA's serve. KATIE TUCKER, RACHEL POWELL and JENNIFER DOEBEREINER posted a pair of blocks apiece while Cole and setter TYLER BALDONADO combined for eight service aces.
The Lady Lions now stand at 9-2 overall and move to 1-0 in the Great South Athletic Conference. Piedmont will hit the hardwood again tomorrow, September 14th as they host conference foe Huntingdon College at Cave Arena beginning at 1:00.
