Behind an iron-clad defensive effort the Piedmont College women's soccer team opened the 2008 season in style with a 2-0 shutout victory over host Florida College this evening in Temple Terrace, FL. The Lady Lions dominated the time of possesion and kept the home town Falcons on their heels for the duration of the match as the team notched first-year head coach Stephen Andrew a win in his PC debut.
PC scored the eventual game winning goal off the foot of junior midfielder CAITLIN HURD in the 11th minute of action. Hurd connected on the unassisted goal, the fourth of her career and the third game-winner, beating the FC keeper from 20 yards out off a rebounded free kick.
The lead would remain until the 82nd minute when junior KATIE CORLEY blasted an insurance goal into the back of the net off a pass from sophomore KATIE PORTER. The Falcons never threatened and when the final whistle blew the Lady Lions walked off with the shutout victory.
Piedmont posted 12 shots on goal while the home team could not connect on a single shot. The Lady Lions also posted seven corner kicks compared to the Falcons single scoring chance. Between the posts goalkeeper KAITLYN INDUNI recorded the shutout, the fifth of her career.
The Lady Lions move to 1-0 on the young season and will return to action again on Thursday, September 4th as they travel to local rival Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, GA beginning at 5:00.
