Lions Drop Second Straight Contest To End Regular-Season

Head coach Jim Peeples and his 11th ranked baseball team has finished its regular-season schedule and now await a potential NCAA Division-III National Tournament bid.
The Piedmont College baseball team wrapped up its 2008 regular season tonight with a 16-6 non-conference loss to host Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC.  The Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead only to see the Monarchs rally for the victory.  PC wraps up the regular-season schedule with a 33-12 overall record and #11 national ranking marking a pair of firsts since full-fledged NCAA Division-III membership in 2003.

PC took an early 1-0 lead after second baseman COLE SPEDALE drew the walk, stole second and scored on third baseman Andrew House's single to the gap in left center. The Lions extended their lead to 6-0 after scoring five runs on five hits in the top of the third, capped off by a ground rule double by catcher COREY LINDSEY.

Methodist came back to take a 7-6 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third and a five-run sixth inning before icing the victory with nine runs in the bottom of the eighth.

House and teammate TRAVIS HUNT were the only PC players to record multiple hits with House notching a pair or RBI's.

The consecutive losses mark on the the second time the Lions have dropped back-to-back contests.

Piedmont's 33-12 overall record marks a program best in both the six-year tenure of head coach Jim Peeples and the five-year span of NCAA Division-III membership.  PC is currently ranked 11th in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and reached a highest ranked of fifth.

PC will now await a potential NCAA Division-III National Tournament bid as a national Pool B selection.  NCAA Tournament selections will be announced on May 11th with PC hoping to secure its first-ever baseball NCAA post-season appearance and the 10th overall for the school.
