The Piedmont College baseball team dropped a 9-1 decision to fourth-seeded Lynchburg College tonight in the opening round of the 2008 NCAA Division-III South Regional at Dan Daniel Park in Danville, VA. The third-seeded Lions will now face top-seeded Salisbury University tomorrow, May 15th, at 3:00 in an elimination game.
LC's Joe Devlin tossed a complete game as as the Hornets improved to 31-11 while the loss drops 11th ranked Piedmont to 33-13. Devlin improved to 9-0, scattered eight hits, struck out four and walked three batters.
The Hornets got the only run they needed in the top of the first inning as Cameron Grant doubled to leadoff the game and then scored on a Kyle Bradley single.
Leading 4-0 going to the ninth inning, LC tacked on five more runs to put the game out of reach.
Jon Crews went 4-for-4 with three RBI for the Hornets, including a two-run home run in the final frame. Ryan Litz went 3-for-4 with four RBI and also had a ninth inning home run.
Shelton Spencer (6-3) took the defeat for the Lions. At the plate, ANDREW MIGETZ was 2-4 while COREY LINDSEY notched a pair of hits as well including a run batted in for PC.
The NCAA post-season appearance is the first ever for the PC baseball team.
