In the first Great South Athletic Conference action of the season the Piedmont College softball team overcame visiting Wesleyan College 9-1 and 15-3 in a pair of run-rule contests this afternoon at Walker Field. Piedmont blasted 23 hits and led for all 11 innings to notch their second home doubleheader sweep of the season.
In the first game the Lady Lions jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first inning as
MEGAN DAY led things off with a triple and scored on a
MARISSA HARDING RBI-single. After a sacrifice bunt
EMILY MAXEY drove in Harding with a single to cap the scoring.
After PC tacked on single runs in the third and fifth inning the Pioneers recorded their only run of the game in the top of the sixth. The Lady Lions put the game away with five runs on four hits in the home half with the game-winning run being driven in by Harding with two outs.
In the second game Wesleyan went in order in the first allowing PC to take a 4-0 advantage in the bottom of the inning as the Lady Lions sent eight hitters to the plate. The Pioneers answered with a single run in the top of the second but Piedmont took a commanding lead with four runs in the bottom of the second.
WC would answer with their final two runs in the third but the Lady Lions again responded with five runs on four hits. In the bottom of the fourth PC completed the scoring with two runs and after the Pioneers went in order in the fifth the run-rule took effect.
MEGAN DAY paced the offensive surge going 4-7 with six runs scored and four stolen bases.
LINDSAY DREVLOW was also impressive going 6-8 with six runs while
MICHELLE CRANDALL chipped in going 2-5 with a pair of RBI's and a homerun.
MARISSA HARDING and
EMILY MAXEY combined for five hits and seven RBI's while Drevlow and
MICHELLE BRODERICK picked up complete game victories on the mound.
The wins move PC to 15-8 overall and 2-0 in the Great South Athletic Conference. The Lady Lions will take tomorrow off and return to conference action on Thursday, April 10th as they host LaGrange College in a doubleheader scheduled for 5:00.
