With the nine seniors being recognized prior to the start of competition, the #5 Piedmont College baseball team swept a doubleheader from #14 Emory University by the scores of 7-6 and 10-6 this afternoon in a battle of nationally ranked teams at PC's Loudermilk Field. The Lions posted three runs in the bottom of the ninth to take game one in dramatic fashion and exploded for 10 runs on 12 hits to take the finale.
The victories move PC to 24-7 overall and give the squad a season record of 19-5 at the friendly confines of Loudermilk Field. The Lions will travel to Atlanta, GA for the third and final game of the season series with Emory tomorrow, April 7th with first pitch set for 3:00.
Piedmont jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one. The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth when the Eagles posted two runs on three hits. EU added three runs in the eighth to take a 5-1 advantage. The Lions answered with three runs in the home half with four consecutive two out hits making the score 5-4.
EU would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a solo homerun setting up the dramatic finish. In the bottom of the ninth COLE SPEDALE led off with a walk and scored on an ANDREW MIGETZ double off the rightfield fence. After an out Migetz scampered home on a JOHN DUKE RBI-single knotting the score at 6-6. JUSTIN VORHERR then notched the game-winning hit on a double to leftcenter giving PC the walk off victory.
After jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the second game Emory answered with five runs in the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead. The Lions posted a single run in the fourth and retook the lead for good in the sixth inning wtih three runs on three hits and a bases loaded walk. PC tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eigth and TOM DIMITROFF came on to notch his 10th save of the season going two and a third innings striking out three.
ANDY HOUSE went 5-7 with three sacrifices and three RBI's on the day while EVAN NISSLEY scored four runs and swiped four bags. ANDREW MIGETZ went 5-7 with three RBI's and three walks while Vorherr posted three RBI's and a pair of doubles. Of the Lions 24 hits, nine went for extra bases.
Dimitroff picked up the relief victory in game one and the save in the finale. JOSH STRICKLAND notched his fourth relief victory of the season in game two going three innings allowing zero earned runs with four strikeouts.
