Top-Seeded Softball Team Advances In GSAC Tournament

PC Explodes For Six-Runs In The Sixth Inning En Route To Victory Over Maryville

Marissa Harding posted a pair of hits and a run scored in the Lady Lions' 6-2 victory over Maryville College this afternoon to advance in the GSAC Tournament.

The top seeded Piedmont College softball team defeated fourth seeded Maryville College this afternoon at Walker Field by the score of 6-2 to advance in the 2008 Great South Athletic Conference Tournament. After trailing 2-0 going into the sixth inning the Lady Lions exploded for six unanswered runs for the four-run victory.

Both teams went scoreless for the first three innings before the Scots struck first with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Maryville held the Lady Lions scoreless for the next two innings setting up the dramatic six-run sixth inning.

With one out in the home half of the sixth MARISSA HARDING got the inning going with a single. After EMILY MAXEY and MICHELLE CRANDALL posted back to back walks, LEAH DELLA TORRE delivered the game-winning hit with a bases clearing double to rightcenter. NIKKI EASTMAN followed with an RBI-single and after a throwing error plated the fifth run MEGAN DAY capped the scoring with a two-out RBI-single.

B.J. COFER threw a complete game striking out four hitters while only allowing a pair of earned runs. The victory is her 14th of the season and 15th complete game in 17 starts. Della Torre led the offense going 1-3 with a run scored and the game-winning three RBI's while Day and Harding chipped in with a pair of hits respectively.

The victory moves Piedmont to 27-11 and will set up a matchup with third seeded LaGrange College tomorrow, April 26th at Walker Field beginning at 2:00.
