The Piedmont College baseball team swept a Great South Athletic Conference doubleheader from Maryville College in Maryville, TN this afternoon by the scores of 10-9 and 18-1. After the Scots ended game one with the tying run at third base, the Lions offense exploded for 18 runs on 19 hits in the finale, including a six run third inning.
The wins move PC to 26-8 overall and 4-1 in the Great South Athletic Conference. These two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow, April 13th with first pitch scheduled for 1:00.
In the first game the Lions jumped out in the first inning with six runs. The Scots would answer with a pair of runs in the first and second inning before Piedmont posted three runs in the third making the score 9-4. Maryville added two runs in the fourth and when the sixth inning came to a close Piedmont clung to a 10-8 lead.
In the ninth, senior
TOM DIMITROFF was able to nail down his 11th save of the season with a game-ending strikeout, stranding the game-tying run at third base.
ANDREW MIGETZ led the offense going 4-6 with two RBI's while
EVAN NISSLEY went 2-4 with a pair of runs and three runs batted in.
In the second contest the Lions posted runs in seven of the nine innings, highlighted by a six run third inning. In the third PC posted its first back-to-back homeruns of the season as
ZAC STEIN notched his first career grand slam and Nissley followed on the next pitch with a solo homer to the opposite field.
The Lions offensive surge was capped in the ninth inning on a pinch-hit solo homerun off the bat of
BRADLEY ROLAND.
MATT BURGESS picked up the victory on the mound going seven innings allowing only one earned run while striking out three.
