PC Baseball Team Sweeps Shenandoah University In Doubleheader

Lions Extend Winning Streak To Season-High Six Games

John Duke went 3-5 with four RBI's including the game-winning runs in the fifth inning of game two in the Lions' sweep of Shenandoah University this afternoon at Loudermilk Field.

In the first two games of a 15-game homestand the Piedmont College baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Shenandoah University this afternoon at Loudermilk Field by the scores of 8-2 and 5-2. The Lions extend their season-high winning streak to six games and move to 9-1 at home.

In game one the Lions notched the first run of the ball game in the second inning as JUSTIN VORHERR posted a two-out single and later scored on a JOHN DUKE RBI-double. The Hornets responded with a single run in the fourth, the last tie score of the game.

The Lions answered with a single run in the fifth as JUSTIN OATES came around to score after leading the inning off with a triple. PC then exploded for five runs on five hits in the sixth with all of the damage being done with two outs. Oates and Lindsey came thru with two out two-RBI singles and EVAN NISSLEY drove in the fifth run with a single to rightfield.

SPENCER SHELTON picked up his third consecutive winning decision going six innings allowing one earned run while striking out eight. The PC bullpen threw three innings of relief allowing one run while striking out six of the nine outs.

In the second game PC trailed 2-0 going into the fourth inning of the seven inning contest. TRAVIS HUNT led off with a double and was followed by an ANDY HOUSE single. With two outs JUSTIN VORHERR singled up the middle plating Oates and putting runners on the corners. Duke again came thru with a two-out triple driving in the game-winning runs.

The Lions would add a pair of insurance runs in the sixth as Vorherr notched a two-out RBI-double and later scored on a Duke RBI-single to leftfield. ANDY GRAF picked up the victory out of the pen while TOM DIMITROFF earned his fifth save of the season going two innings striking out one.

On the day Duke paced the offense going 3-5 with four RBI's and a walk while Vorherr went 4-7 with two RBI's and four runs scored. The Lions pounded out 17 hits in 14 innings, six of which went for extra bases while the pitching was solid striking out 18 opposing hitters.

The victories move PC to 14-3 overall and give the Lions a 6-0 mark for spring break. The Lions will return to the field again on Thursday, March 13th as they host Edgewood College beginning at 7:00.
