In the first Great South Athletic Conference game of the season the fifth-ranked Piedmont College baseball team defeated visiting Huntingdon College tonight at Loudermilk Field by the score of 9-1. The Lions used a solid outing by sophomore SPENCER SHELTON who went six innings allowing only two hits while striking eight.
After holding the Hawks scoreless in the top of the first the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the home half. TRAVIS HUNT posted a one-out triple to rightcenter and crossed the plate on an ANDREW MIGETZ RBI-single. Two hitters later JUSTIN VORHERR posted a two-out RBI-single to cap the scoring.
Piedmont tacked on a single run in the third and then exploded for three runs in the fourth on three hits with the RBI-s going to Migetz, ANDY HOUSE, and JOHN DUKE. The Lions finished their scoring in the fifth with three runs highlighted by back to back singles from Migetz and House that produced the runs.
Huntingdon posted its only run of the game in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly but could get no closer and dropped the eight-run decision. B.J. HAMPTON threw a scoreless inning of relief while JOSH MCEACHIN threw a pair of innings allowing only one run while striking out five hitters. Shelton's victory moves him to 4-0 on the season.
Migetz led the offensive surge going 4-5 with four RBI's and three runs scored. House went 2-3 with two RBI's while Nissley and Hunt chipped in with a pair of runs scored respectively. The Lions outhit the Hawks 13-4 and played flawless defense in the victory.
The win snaps PC's two-game skid and moves them to 21-6 overall and 1-0 in the GSAC. These same two teams will meet again tomorrow, March 29th at Loudermilk Field beginning at 3:00.
