Oglethorpe Overcomes #5 Lions 9-8 To Even Season Series

Ninth Inning Rally Falls One Run Short For PC

Evan Nissley and Justin Vorherr combined four four hits and five RBI's in the Lions loss to Oglethorpe University.

For the first time this season the fifth-ranked Piedmont College baseball team dropped back to back games, tonight at the hands of visiting non-conference foe Oglethorpe University by the score of 9-8. The Stormy Petrels controlled the game from the outset and when the Lions fell just short in the ninth OU was able to even the season series.

The loss drops PC to 20-6 overall. The Lions will look to rebound on Friday, March 28th as they begin Great South Athletic Conference action against Huntingdon College at Loudermilk Field in game one of the three game set beginning at 7:00.

Oglethorpe opened the scoring in the second inning with a pair of runs to take the only lead of the ball game and added with another two runs in the fourth. The Lions countered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth as EVAN NISSLEY came around on an error and ANDREW MIGETZ scored a sacrifice fly from JUSTIN VORHERR.

The Stormy Petrels added to their lead with three runs in the sixth and two runs in the seventh making the score 9-2. The Lions added single runs in the seventh and eighth as Nissley and Vorherr struck with RBI-singles.

In the ninth the Lions loaded the bases with no outs and scored the first run on a MIgetz RBI-walk. After an ANDY HOUSE RBI-groundout JUSTIN VORHERR brought PC within one with a two-out double scoring a pair. The Lions would get no closer than second base as the final out was recorded and Oglethorpe walked away with the one-run decision.

For the game the Stormy Petrels outhit Piedmont 17-7 and capitilized on a pair of PC errors that led to three runs. Nissley and Vorherr went 2-4 from the plate and combined for two runs and five RBI's. Migetz went 1-3 with a double two walks and an RBI.
