Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over #10 Marietta And Sewanee

Piedmont Moves To 11-3 Overall After Three Weekend Victories

Justin Oates went 4-8 with two RBI's in the Lions' doubleheader sweep this afternoon over #10 Marietta College and Sewanee-University of the South.

In the first doubleheader of the season the Piedmont College baseball team recorded a pair of victories over #10 Marietta College and Sewanee-University of the South this afternoon at Loudermilk Field by the scores of 6-5 and 9-4. The Lions won the first game in dramatic fashion with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth and used a five-run third inning in the finale for the wins.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 5-0 advantage with a pair of runs in the third and three in the fourth. The Lions responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut into the lead as JUSTIN OATES and COREY LINDSEY notched back to back RBI-singles.

After a scoreless fifth inning Piedmont posted a single run in the sixth as TRAVIS HUNT drew a walk with the bases loaded plating COLE SPEDALE who led the inning off with a single. In the seventh the Lions got within one run as Spedale scored on a COREY LINDSEY two-out RBI.

PC held Marietta scoreless in the eighth and ninth setting up the dramatic bottom of the ninth. MATT DEVITO led the inning off with a sharp single to leftfield. After pinch runner JARED MOON advanced to second on a wild pitch, JUSTIN VORHERR reached on a fielder's choice putting runners on the corners with no outs. Spedale then came thru with a safety squeeze plating Moon for the game tying run.

Oates followed with a single and COREY LINDSEY added a walk before EVAN NISSLEY came thru with the game winning RBI on a bases loaded hit by pitch. TOM DIMITROFF threw a scoreless two innings for the victory as the Lions outhit their opponents 16-6.

In the second game against Sewanee Piedmont struck in the third inning with five runs on six hits, three of which went for extra bases. TRAVIS HUNT led the inning off with a double followed by an ANDREW MIGETZ RBI triple. ANDY HOUSE then added a double followed by a Vorherr sacrifice fly. Spedale and Nissley then capped the scoring with RBI singles.

The Lions tacked on three insurance runs in the sixth highlighted by a SPENCER SHELTON two-run homer to leftcenter. PC got their final run of the game in the eighth with two outs as Spedale tripled and JUSTIN OATES followed with an RBI-single.

The wins move Piedmont to 11-3 overall. The Lions will hit the road on Thursday, March 7th as they travel to Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville, VA with action set to begin at 3:00.
