Behind an impressive outing from starter MATT BURGESS the Piedmont College baseball team defeated Virginia Wesleyan College this afternoon by the score of 5-2 at Loudermilk Field. With the victory the Lions take the season series from the Marlins and extend their season long winning streak to nine games.

At the halfway point of the regular season Piedmont now stands at 17-3 overall. The Lions will return to the field again on short rest tomorrow, March 17th in their third doubleheader of the season against visiting Bridgewater College beginning at 3:00.

After a scoreless first inning the Lions took the lead in the second with a pair of runs. JARED MOON reached on an error and came around to score on a JUSTIN OATES RBI-single. COLE SPEDALE scampered across with the second run with two outs to give PC the 2-0 lead.

Virignia Wesleyan scored single runs in the third and fifth inning to knot the score at 2-2. The tie was short lived however as the Lions scored the eventual game-winning run as EVAN NISSLEY stole second and COREY LINDSEY came home after the throw kicked away. Nissley eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of ANDREW MIGETZ

Piedmont tacked on an insurance in the sixth as Spedale singled with two out and eventually scored on a Nissley RBI-single. The Lions posted 10 hits and swiped five bags en route to the victory.

On the mound junior MATT BURGESS went seven innings allowing only two earned runs on five hits while striking out six. TOM DIMITROFF came on for his seventh save of the season allowing one hit and striking out three in two innings of scoreless relief.
