For the eighth consecutive time the Piedmont College baseball team came out on top, this evening in dramatic fashion against Virginia Wesleyan College at Loudermilk Field by the score of 5-4. Junior ANDREW MIGETZ stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth and drove in the game-winning run with a single up the middle for the walk-off victory.
After the Marlins jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a pair of hits in the first inning, the Lions responded with a pair of runs in the home half. EVAN NISSLEY and TRAVIS HUNT crossed the plate after leading the inning off with a single and a walk.
Virginia Wesleyan retook the lead in the third with two runs on three hits. PC then retook the lead in the fifth capitilizing on three Marlin errors. VWC then knotted the game at 4-4 in the sixth with a sacrifice fly to leftfield. Both teams went scoreless into the bottom of the ninth setting the stage for the dramatic conclusion.
After the first out EVAN NISSLEY reached on an error and advanced to third on a TRAVIS HUNT infield single putting runners on the corners with one out. After a Hunt stolen base Andrew Migitz connected on a single up the middle plating Nissley for the game-winning walk off victory.
In a game that featured four lead changes the Lions played flawless defense and allowed only one walk. SPENCER SHELTON picked up the no decision going seven innings allowing four runs while striking out eight. TOM DIMITROFF picked up his fifth victory throwing a pair of scoreless innings striking out a pair of Marlins.
Nissley led the offense going 2-4 with a walk and three runs scored including the game-winner. Migetz, who has hit safely in 18 out of 19 games went 1-4 with a walk and the game-winning RBI.
Piedmont moves to 16-3 overall and 11-1 at home. These two teams will meet again tomorrow, March 17th in the series finale at Loudermilk Field beginning at 3:00.
