For the second consecutive season the Piedmont College women's basketball team was crowned champions of the Great South Athletic Conference with its 89-73 victory over Maryville College this afternoon in the Johnny Mize Athletic Center. The Lady Lions victory ensures an automatic bid into the 2007-08 NCAA Division-III national tournament.
In a rematch of last year's GSAC finals, Maryville jumped out to a 14-10 advantage in the first six minutes. PC responded in the next six minutes with a 16-3 run highlighted by five different Lady Lions recording points. The Scots then outscored PC 16-7 over the next seven minutes drawing the score even at 33-33. Piedmont found themselves leading 38-36 at intermission as the first half featured six lead changes and a pair of ties.
Both teams played even for the first 14 minutes of the second half as PC clung to a three-point lead at 66-63. With two minutes remaining the Lady Lions led 74-70 before exploding with 12 unanswered points as freshman
LAURA SIMMONS connected on three baskets in the paint.
Maryville could get no closer than 13 points as PC iced the game with nine free-throws in the final minute of regulation to claim the 89-73 victory. The victory marks the 17th consecutive win against a GSAC member over the course of the last two seasons.
For her efforts senior
SHEENA TRIMIAR was named the GSAC tournament's Most Valuable Player. The guard averaged 18 points per game including eight steals.
BETH ADCOCK posted a team high 20 points to lead five teammates in double figures. Senior
NIKKI SOSEBEE posted a double double with 16 points and a game high 12 rebounds while
LAURA SIMMONS added 15 points. Trimiar and
LISA JENNINGS chipped in with 13 and 12 points respectively.
