For the second time this season the Piedmont College softball team split a home doubleheader, this evening against south region foe Millsaps College at PC's Walker Field. The Lady Lions fell in extra innings in game one 5-3 but responded with a 9-1 victory in the finale.
The split moves Piedmont to 4-2 overall. The Lady Lions will return to the field on Wednesday, March 12th as they travel to Southern Wesleyan University in a rematch doubleheader beginning at 5:00.
In the first game PC notched a single run in the bottom of the third as EMILY MAXEY continued her hot hitting with an RBI-single plating LINDSAY DREVLOW. Millsaps answered with a two-run fifth to take a 2-1 lead. The Lady Lions answered tying the score in the home half of the fifth as LEAH DELLA TORRE drove home RALEY WHITE with an RBI-single.
The score remained tied until the eighth inning when both teams traded single runs with the international tie-breaker. In the ninth Millsaps plated a pair of runs on two hits as PC was unable to answer. MEGAN DAY paced PC's offense going 3-5 while Drevlow picked up the hard-luck loss on the mound going the distance.
In the second game Piedmont jumped out with four runs on three hits in the first inning. MARISSA HARDING singled in the first run while Drevlow drew a bases loaded RBI-walk. LEAH DELLA TORRE followed with a sacrifice fly and NIKKI EASTMAN capped the scoring with a two-out RBI-single.
PC tacked on a single run in the second on a sacrifice fly from Harding plating Day from third. The Lady Lions added three insurance runs in the fourth on RBI's from EMILY MAXEY, MICHELLE CRANDALL, and Drevlow. After MC scored its lone run in the fifth Piedmont ended the game on the run-rule in the sixth with an EMILY MAXEY RBI-groundout.
B.J. COFER recorded her second win of the season going six innings allowing one earned runs while posting seven strikeouts. Leading the charge offensively was Harding, Maxey, and Drevlow who all notched a pair of RBI's. Harding was a perfect 3-3 with a sacrifice fly while Day scored three runs.
