After defeating LaGrange College in the semifinals of the 2007-08 Great South Athletic Conference Tournament the Piedmont College men's basketball team fell just short this afternoon in the championship to #20 Maryville College by the score of 90-79 in the Johnny Mize Athletic Center. The Lions were able to get within three points late in the second half but could not draw even and finished runner-up in the GSAC.
PC trailed for the duration of the first half and found themselves down 41-27 with five minutes remaining in the first half. The Lions closed the half on a 10-3 run as
MICHAEL RUBIO notched five points including a three-pointer. At intermission Piedmont entered the locker room trailing by seven at 44-37.
Over the first nine minutes of the second half the Lions cut the lead to three points at 64-61. PC used the perimeter attack connecting on four shots from behind the arc including a pair from Rubio. The teams traded buckets until the Scots extended the lead 10 with five minutes to go.
Piedmont, which trailed by as many as 16 points, again rallied to cut the lead to two possessions 82-76 with 3:36 remaining only to see the Scots seal the game with a 7-0 run.
For the game
BRANDEN MAYWEATHER led five teammates in double figures with 19 points including 5-6 from behind the arc.
JAKE BALDWIN posted 18 points while Rubio and Coppage chipped in with 14 and 13 points respectively.
JAKE GREEN added 11 points and a game high five assists.
