The Piedmont College men's basketball team went on the road and lost in heartbreaking fashion this afternoon at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL by the score of 73-71. After point guard JAKE GREEN tied the score with a pair of clutch free throws with only seconds remaining the Hawks went the length of the floor and found the game-winning basket with no time left on the clock.
Huntingdon opened the game on a 10-2 run in the first five minutes to take an early lead. The Lions clawed back and eventually retook the lead on a three-pointer by JAKE GREEN with four minutes remaining in the first frame. The Hawks finished the first half with a pair of tri-fectas in the final 30 seconds to take a 42-36 advantage into the half.
With 13 minutes left in regulation Huntingdon held its largest advantage at 55-45 before PC responded with a 9-0 run sparked by a three-pointer from MICHAEL RUBIO and three consecutive layups off of four turnovers. The Lions were unable to reclaim the lead and found themselves down five points with only 47 seconds remaining.
Off a Huntingdon turnover, SAMUEL COPPAGE netted a three-pointer to put PC down two with only 13 second left in the game. After the Lions forced a Huntingdon turnover Green knocked down the two shots from the charity stripe. The Hawks first shot missed but after an offensive rebound the home team connected on the putback as time expire for the victory.
Senior JAKE BALDWIN led five Lions in double figures with 16 points while JAKE GREEN narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, and a game-high five assists. Coppage and Rubio netted 13 and 12 points respectively and both combined for a perfect 8-8 from the charity stripe while BRANDEN MAYWEATHER added 11 points and five rebounds.
The loss drops Piedmont to an even 11-11 overall and 1-3 in the Great South Athletic Conference. The Lions will look to rebound on Saturday, February 16th as they host conference foe LaGrange College at 4:00 in the Jonny Mize Athletic Center.
