For the third time this season the Piedmont College women's basketball team defeated Huntingdon College, this evening in the semifinals of the Great South Athletic Conference tournament by the score of 91-77. The Lady Lions dominated every facet of the game en route to their 13th consecutive win.
PC jumped out to an 8-2 advantage in the first five minutes as four different Lady Lions posted baskets. Huntingdon cut the lead to a mere 18-16 before Piedmont went on a 21-6 run highlighted eight points from
STEPHANIE RAINWATER, six of which came on a pair of three-pointers.
The Lady Lions never trailed in the first half and used 15 points off their deep bench to take a 43-32 advantage into intermission. PC forced 10 turnovers and converted them into eight points as
SHEENA TRIMIAR and
BETH ADCOCK both notched a pair of steals.
Early in the second half PC extended its lead to 55-39 as
NIKKI SOSEBEE tallied six points and four rebounds. With five minutes remaining the Lady Lions held their largest lead of the game at 85-59 as PC hit 10-11 shots from the floor in a six-minute span. When the final buzzer sounded PC advanced with the 91-77 victory.
The Lady Lions shot 36-71 (51%) from the floor, 26 of which were assisted. PC dominated the glass recording 47 rebounds, 13 of which were offensive and forced 20 turnovers on 12 steals.
SHEENA TRIMIAR led three teammates in double figures with 23 points and five rebounds, both game highs.
Fellow seniors Sosebee and Rainwater notched 13 and 11 points respectively while senior
YETTA BAILEY narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds, five of which were on the offensive glass.
The victory moves Piedmont to 23-3 overall and sets up a GSAC championship game against #3 seeded Maryville College tomorrow, March 1st in the Johnny Mize Athletic Center beginning at 2:00. The winner will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Division-III national tournament next week.
