The Piedmont College softball team got the 2008 season underway this afternoon with a split, falling at the hands of DePauw University 8-0 but rebounding to record the first victory of the season 6-3 over Adrian College at PC's Walker Field. After being shutout in the first game the Lady Lions exploded for six-run fifth inning against AC en route to their first win of the new campaign.
DePauw, who entered the game after finishing fifth in the 2007 NCAA Division-III World Series, produced eight runs on 11 hits and plated runs in five of the seven innings. The Lady Lions could only muster three hits led by MARISSA HARDING who went 1-2 with a walk.
After Adrian took a 3-0 advantage in the second game Piedmont found its stride with a six-run fifth inning to take the team's first lead of the season. In an inning that saw three hits and the Lady Lions send 10 hitters to the plate, LEAH DELLA TORRE broke the inning open with a two-out single that drove in a pair of runs.
Lindsey Drevlow came on in relief throwing four and two-thirds innings of shutout relief for the victory. MEGAN DAY paced the offense going 2-4 with a run scored while RALEY WHITE was 1-2 with an RBI-double.
The Lady Lions, who now stand at 1-1 overall, will play host to Southern Wesleyan University tomorrow, February 25th at Walker Field with game one of the doubleheader beginning at 2:00.
