For the second consecutive game the Piedmont College baseball team defeated Millsaps College this afternoon in Jackson, MS by the score of 9-6. In the top of the sixth the Lions exploded for six runs on six hits to break the game open and held off a ninth inning rally from the Majors for their eighth win of the season.
The two-game sweep over Millsaps, who was receiving votes in the latest D3Baseball.com national poll, moves PC to 8-2 overall. The Lions will return to action again on Thursday, February 28th as they host Adrian College at Loudermilk Field starting at 3:00.
Piedmont posted the first run of the game in the top of the fifth and after a scoreless home half of the inning the Lions jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the sixth. ANDREW MIGETZ led the inning off with a double to rightcenter and was followed by an ANDY HOUSE single and a MATT DEVITO hit by pitch. JUSTIN VORHERR then doubled to rightcenter plating a pair of runs.
JUSTIN OATES then plated a run with an RBI-single followed by a COREY LINDSEY double driving in a run. EVAN NISSLEY then plated a pair with a single up the middle to cap the offensive surge. Millsaps answered with four runs in the home half making the score 7-4.
The Lions added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the eighth as COLE SPEDALE scampered home on a wild pitch and Nissley then scored on a two-out RBI-single from TRAVIS HUNT. TOM DIMITROFF recorded the final six outs of the game, the final coming on a remarkable web gem from Nissley robbing the Majors of a sure double.
Senior JOHN VOHLKEN recorded the victory going five and a third innings allowing three runs on two hits. JOSH MCEACHIN and B.J. HAMPTON went the next inning and two-thirds allowing only one run. Dimitroff came in for the second day and a row to nail down the victory.
The Lions outhit the Majors 13-8 and earned eight of their nine runs. On the weekend the Lions pounded out 28 hits and scored 16 runs. The victories over Millsaps are the first wins for Piedmont in the school's history.
