The Piedmont College baseball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped this afternoon by the homestanding Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan College by the score of 10-3 in Rocky Mount, NC. The Bishops drove in seven runs with two outs including the back-breaking grandslam homerun in the fifth en route to the win.
Piedmont drops it's first game of the season and now stands at 5-1 overall. The Lions will return to the friendly confines of Loudermilk Field on Wednesday, February 20th as they face south region Washington & Lee University starting at 3:00.
After NC Wesleyan manufactured a single run in the first the Lions answered scoring three runs on five hits in the fourth. MATT DEVITO, JUSTIN VORHERR, and JUSTIN OATES all notched RBI-singles to give the Lions a slim 3-1 advantage.
The Bishops answered with a single run in the home half of the fourth and then broke the game open in the fifth with a two-out grand slam over the rightfield wall. The Lions could only muster four hits over the remainder of the game while NCWesleyan added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth on a two-out RBI-double.
MATT DEVITO led the offense for Piedmont going 4-4 from the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Andrew Migitz also added a 3-4 performance extending his hit streak to six games. The Lions outhit the Bishops 11-9 but standed seven runners on base, all in scoring position.
