For the fifth consecutive time to open the 2008 season, the Piedmont College baseball team came out on top with a 5-3 victory over NC Wesleyan College this afternoon in Rocky Mount, NC. Behind an outstanding seven-inning pitching performance by SPENCER SHELTON the Lions moved to a perfect 5-0 on the young season.
After going down in order in the first inning the Battling Bishops jumped out with a pair of unearned runs in the home half. Two innings later the Lions reclaimed the lead with a three spot highlighted by an RBI-single by ANDREW MIGETZ and a sacrifice fly from ANDY HOUSE.
NC Wesleyan tied the game for the final time in the sixth inning but the Lions quickly responded with a single run in the seventh as COREY LINDSEY drove in COLE SPEDALE from third, his second run of the game. In the eighth Piedmont added an insurance run on a MATT DEVITO RBI-double plating Migetz from second base.
SPENCER SHELTON was impressive on the mound going seven innings allowing a single earned run while striking out six. TOM DIMITROFF came on in the eighth and recorded his second consecutive save with a scoreless two innings.
Spedale led the offense going 2-3 with a walk and a pair of runs score while Migetz and Lindsey went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored respectively. The Lions will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow, February 17th against NC Wesleyan with first-pitch scheduled for 1:00.
