After trailing for five of the nine innings, the Piedmont College baseball team used a three-run seventh inning for the 5-4 come from behind victory over Oglethorpe University this evening in Atlanta, GA. The road victory is the first of the season for the Lions who were able to fend off a ninth inning rally to escape with their fourth consecutive victory.
Piedmont trailed for the first time all season after the Stormy Petrels posted a single run in the bottom of the second inning. The Lions responded knotting the game at 1-1 after a leadoff double by
TYSON BAXTER who later scored on an RBI-single from
ANDREW MIGETZ.
OU answered in the home half of the third with three runs capped by a two-run homer making the score 4-1. After
JUSTIN VORHERR notched an RBI-groundout plating
ANDY HOUSE the Lions found themselves trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh.
Piedmont loaded the bases with two outs before House drew an RBI-walk plating
EVAN NISSLEY to put PC within one. Pinch hitter
SPENCER SHELTON then drove in a pair with a single to leftcenter to make the score 5-4 for the final lead change of the evening.
After the Stormy Petrels led off the bottom of the ninth with a double, rightfielder
JARED MOON threw out the potential tying run at the plate for the first out of the inning. Closer
TOM DIMITROFF then recorded a strikeout and a popout to seal the one-run victory for his first save of the year.
JOSH STRICKLAND picked up his first win of the season with two and a third innings of scoreless relief.
B.J. HAMPTON came on in the seventh retiring the first three hitters he saw before handing the ball to Dimitroff for the two-inning save.
Piedmont now stands at 4-0 overall on the young season and will again hit the road for game one of a weekend series in Rocky Mount, NC against N.C. Wesleyan College on Saturday, February 16th beginning at 1:00.
