In the 2008-2009 home opener at Cave Arena the Piedmont College men's basketball team fell just short to visiting USA-South Conference member Greensboro College by the score of 73-71. After a furious second half comeback by the Lions the visitors connected on a fast break layup with less than a second remaining to seal the one-possesion victory.
In the first half the lead changed six times and there were 10 ties as both teams fought for every basket. The Lions led by as many as six points with four minutes remaining but the Pride posted a 16-6 run to end the first half and take a slim 36-32 advantage into the locker room.
In the second frame Greensboro extended the margin to a game high 14 points at 57-43 with 10 minutes remaining. PC rallied with an 18-6 run to knot the score up at 63-63 highlighted by six points from post player
J.C. HEREBIA. The teams traded blows down the stretch and with the score tied 71-71 the Pride forced a PC turnover and hit the game-winning basket with less than a second remaining for the win.
Herebia led all scorers with a game high 23 points while
MICHAEL RUBIO and
SAMUEL COPPAGE chipped in with 15 and 14 points respectively. Rubio was also impressive on defense forcing four turnovers. The Lions posted a season best 47% (22-47) from the floor and held the opponents to only 38% (26-68).
The loss moves Piedmont to 0-4 on the young season. The Lions will hit the road on Saturday, December 6th as they travel to NCAA Division-III south region host Rust College in Holly Springs, MS starting at 1:00 CST.
