With all the non-conference games completed, the Piedmont College women's basketball team won its openingGreat South Athletic Conference matchup tonight over visiting Agnes Scott College 63-46. PC's defense was up to the task forcing 26 turnovers, 13 steals, and a season-high 10 blocks en route to the victory.
In a first half that featured six lead changes and eight ties the Scotties took an early 5-2 advantage before PC answered with a 9-6 run to knot the score at 11-11 with 13 minutes remaining. During a 10-minute stretch that featured no fouls on either side ASC scored seven unanswered points before the Lady Lions went on an 12-5 run to tie the game for the final time at 23-23.
Piedmont entered the half on a 10-5 run putting them up 33-28, and quickly expanded the lead in the first seven minutes of the second frame with a 16-5 run. The Lady Lions led by as many as 20 with four minutes remaining and cruised down the stretch to the 17-point victory.
PC shot an impressive 13-27 (48%) from the field in the second half while the Scotties could only muster 6-25 (24%) from the floor. For the game the Lady Lions converted on 26 baskets, 17 of which were assisted and an impressive 6-12 (50%) from behind the three-point line.
LISA JENNINGS was the top scorer for Piedmont, who recorded baskets from 11 different players, with 13 points including 3-4 from the tri-fecta. Senior
SHEENA TRIMIAR was dominant on both sides of the ball with 12 points and a game-high six steals while
NIKKI SOSEBEE was the Lady Lions' top rebounder with seven boards, three of which were offensive.
The victory moves Piedmont to an overall record of 11-3, 1-0 in the Great South Athletic Conference. The Lady Lions will play host to Huntingdon College on Saturday, January 19th as part of the first home GSAC doubleheader of the season beginning at 2:00 in the Johnny Mize Athletic Center.
