In the first overtime game of the season for the women's basketball team, the visiting Eagles of Emory University came into the Johnny Mize Athletic Center tonight and edged Piedmont College 70-66 snapping the Lady Lions' six-game winning streak. In a thrilling rematch from November 20th, EU was able to put the game away with a 6-3 run in the final two minutes of overtime for the victory.
In the first half the Eagles were able to jump out to a 4-0 advantage before PC went on an impressive 17-0 run over the course of the next five minutes. After the Lady Lions built a 20-6 lead Emory rattled off a 12-4 run to get within six before Piedmont ended the half with a 10-4 run to take a comfortable 34-22 lead into intermission.
In the second frame EU opened with an 18-6 run to even the score at 40-40 with 11 minutes left in regulation. The teams traded the lead five times over the next five minutes before Piedmont built a 58-52 advantage, the largest lead it would hold for the remainder of the game. The Eagles ended regulation with a 7-1 run knotting the teams at 59-59 and sending the game into overtime.
After both teams stood at 63-63 just inside three minutes remaining, EU took the lead for good with a two-point bucket in the paint. The Eagles finished the game on a 7-3 run and sealed the four-point victory.
Despite PC holding the second-chance point advantage at 16-14 both teams recorded 22 points in the paint. Emory held the turnover advantage forcing 22 Piedmont turnovers while allowing only 18. Both teams shot below 36% from the floor and connected on 20+ points from the charity stripe.
NIKKI SOSEBEE was the top scorer for Piedmont with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds.
COURTNEY ODUM notched nine points while three Lady Lions added seven points apiece.
The loss drops Piedmont to 10-3 overall this season. The Lady Lions will open up Great South Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, January 9th as they host Agnes Scott College beginning at 6:00.
