In a meeting of the only two remaining undefeated teams in the Great South Athletic Conference the Piedmont College women's basketball team prevailed with a 73-48 victory over visiting Huntingdon College this afternoon in the Johnny Mize Athletic Center. PC's defense was impressive holding the Lady Hawks to a mere 12-61 (19%) from the floor while forcing 18 turnovers.
The victory moves Piedmont to the top of the GSAC standing with an overall record of 12-3 and a conference record of 2-0. The Lady Lions will return to the hardwood again on Wednesday, January 23rd as they travel to Spelman College in Atlanta, GA beginning at 6:00.
In a first half that featured four lead changes and a pair of tie scores PC started the game on a 7-2 run in the first four minutes before the Lady Hawks answered with an 11-0 run to take a 13-7 lead with just under 14 minutes in the first half. The Lady Lions responded with an 11-5 run to take an 18-17 lead with eight minutes remaining for the final lead change of the game and ended the half with a 13-4 run for a 31-21 intermission score.
In the second frame HC found themselves within ten points at the fifteen minute mark but could get no closer as Piedmont pulled away with 27-13 run over the next ten minutes. The Lady Lions ended the game on an 8-5 run to cruise to the 25-point victory.
NIKKI SOSEBEE narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds, both game highs.
LAURA SIMMONS also reached double figures with 10 points while
SHEENA TRIMIAR,
BETH ADCOCK, and
KAYLA DUNCAN chipped in with eight points respectively. The Lady Lions recorded baskets from a season high 13 different players.
PC shot 22-56 (39%) from the floor including an impressive 25-32 (78%) from the charity stripe. The game featured 48 total fouls including three technical fouls and a season-high 64 free throw attempts.
